Designing for Success Part 2: Podcast Highlights You Can’t Miss

Can’t listen to the full Smart Park Podcast episode right now? No problem. In Designing for Success Part 2, Julie sits down again with Ryan G. Snyder, Director of Planning and Product Development, to break down the strategies shaping the future of water parks and surf destinations. The conversation covers everything from smart expansion planning to wellness, technology, and long term profitability.

Smart Planning Starts with Hub Creation

A major theme of the conversation centers on hub creation, a strategy that allows park planning to work in conjunction with reducing capital costs. For example, centralizing utilities such as electrical, water, and filtration systems helps minimize infrastructure expenses while creating a more efficient foundation for future growth. Thoughtfully planned hubs also make it easier to add new attractions over time without requiring disruptive or costly infrastructure modifications.

Designing for Expansion Before You Need It

Successful parks plan for growth from day one. Whether it is a capped slide opening, a pre designed tower expansion, or landing pools already built to accept future rides, expansion works best when the hard work is done early. Many operational challenges stem from attractions that were not properly planned, especially when it comes to queuing, stair capacity, and circulation.

Renovations Are Becoming the New Normal

With rising costs across real estate, labor, and energy, more projects today focus on expanding or reimagining existing parks rather than building from the ground up. Renovations allow owners to refresh branding, improve guest flow, and increase profitability without expanding the footprint. Creative problem solving is key when transforming older facilities into modern experiences.

Technology as a Guest Experience and Revenue Tool

Technology integration is now an expectation across water parks, surf parks, and resorts. Digital screens, Wi Fi connectivity, photo pass systems, and interactive media enhance storytelling and deepen guest engagement. These tools also create new revenue opportunities while allowing parks to adapt more easily to future programming needs.

What Water Parks Can Teach Surf Parks

The discussion highlights strong overlap between water parks and surf destinations. While surf parks often focus heavily on the main wave attraction, long term success depends on supporting spaces such as retail, wellness areas, and flexible programming zones. Designing for multiple demographics helps extend length of stay and broaden the guest base.

Wellness Is Reshaping Aquatic Design

Wellness continues to influence how aquatic spaces are designed and programmed. Guests are increasingly drawn to outdoor wellness experiences, varied temperature pools, and higher quality food options. Parks that embrace wellness are seeing longer stays, improved guest satisfaction, and stronger word of mouth marketing.

Bigger Is Not Always Better

For years, the industry emphasized the tallest and fastest attractions. Today, designers are balancing spectacle with efficiency. Experiences like action rivers and multi use water attractions can deliver high play value, appeal to a wider demographic, and reduce staffing and operational costs within the same footprint.

Rethinking Kids Areas Through Smarter Design

Kids areas are receiving renewed attention as designers revisit proven concepts and refine them for today’s operational needs. Shallow play zones, nostalgic elements, and freestanding slides can increase fun while reducing lifeguard requirements. These lower cost improvements allow capital to be invested elsewhere in the park.

The Formula for Long Term Success

The episode concludes with a clear takeaway. Great parks are designed through the eyes of the guest and the needs of the operator. When a park is fun, safe, and easy to operate, it creates repeatable experiences that drive long term profitability.
