The Challenge
In 2006, the Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach Resort wanted to expand their property to include a unique water area that would provide an immersive water experience fashioned after a traditional
Puerto Rican sugar mill, showcasing architecturally compelling structures and varying foundations throughout.
The Solution
In order to complete the addition of the Watermill water play area, the resort worked with a design team as well as ADG who operated as the aquatic designer and equipment supplier, to bring their vision to life. The $12 million aquatic playground project was designed around three experiential zones: passive, active and kids. Attractions in these zones include 30-foot water slides, multiple swimming pools, a bubble bench, a replica of an actual watermill manufactured with imported German wood, a real sand beach and the Watermill’s anchor attraction: a wave river featuring ADG’s Wavetek® wave generation technology.
The Result
Standing out amongst fierce resort competition, the Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach Resort has successfully created an innovative and architecturally differentiating waterfront area that generates
appeal as a family vacation destination. Since the opening of the Watermill, the Durado has continually received rave reviews on Trip Advisor for their mix of attractions and attention to detail
in the layout and overall design of the watermill aquatic playground.
