Breaker Beach: the bodyboarders-only wave pool
“It is a wave pool for first-timers and beginner bodyboarders. But it could be an inspiring entry-level experience for future spongers.
Aquatic Development Group (ADG) is a designer and builder of water parks and water park attractions and the North American licensee of the FlowRider. The company also developed Breaker Beach, a wave pool that continuously dispatches two riders every eight seconds.
According to its developers, the structure exclusively made for boogie boarders has a near limitless capacity. Riders only have to queue and wait for their turn.
The world’s first Breaker Beach was installed in Water World, in Denver, Colorado, and opened to the public in 2016. They called it Cowabunga Beach. The local water park wanted to revamp their existing wave pool and decided to try the bodyboarders-only facility. Today, they’re happy with the outcome.
“We love the quality of the waves and the high capacity. One of the best things about this project is that from design to the final product it was less than six months,” explains Joann Cortez, communications director at Water World.
The layout of the Breaker Beach allows for guest flow between amenities, generating additional revenue from food, beverage, cabana rentals retail, parties, and special events. The concept of this rolling breaker is different from all other wave pool concepts. When the waves come, riders have to time the ideal moment for jumping into the wave.
The Breaker Beach was designed to appeal to a wide range of ages and skill levels, but it is clear that it can be a lot of fun for children and adults who have never ridden a bodyboard before.”
