Slides, surf, sun and sand are all plentiful at Riptide Bay, the newest expansion at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Gurnee, Illinois. This 4-acre addition puts Hurricane Harbor at the top of the list for water slides and attractions in the state,
featuring a total of 20 acres, five new daring slides, a Double FlowRider, massive lagoon and luxury cabanas. Having successfully designed and constructed the initial phase of the waterpark in 2005, Aquatic Development Group, Inc. (ADG) was proud to return to add even more water fun.
ADG, an award-winning waterpark design and construction team, created Riptide Bay with a water adventure designed for every age and thrill-seeking level. From daredevil drops, and looping slides, to surf simulators and giant lagoons, there is no shortage of aqua intrigue.
Three extreme slides were implemented with the adrenaline junky in mind. WipeOut, a four-man raft slide, transports guests swirling and looping through tight turns, two intense funnels and a 35 foot drop. Dive Bombers and Mega Wedgie both offer a SkyBOX Capsule Drop Start experience giving riders an immediate thrill as the floor drops out from beneath them, allowing a five-story free fall with acceleration to 40 miles per hour.
Rounding out Riptide Bay is Monsoon Lagoon, the nearly 14,000 square foot, zero depth entry activity pool. Designed with six beautifully rockscaped waterfalls spilling into the 315,951 gallon play area, Monsoon Lagoon offers both relaxation to those guests in the surrounding luxurious cabanas as well as plenty of fun activities for the whole family. Two 26 foot long crossing activity lines span the pool bay with cargo
nets and themed floats, while seven spray columns are ready to drench the aqua patrons. By utilizing ADG’s Whitten water saving Filtration Systems and Pool equipment, Monsoon Lagoon is just as efficient as it is exciting.
Aquatic Development Group, is proud to manufacturer of Riptide Bay’s “Surf Rider”, a Double FlowRider allowing two surfers simultaneously. Positioned within an amphitheater landscaped berm, this FlowRider is a self-contained and
compact breakthrough in sheet wave technology. A thin sheet of water flows over a stationary wave form permitting riders to slide down, carve a turn, and
ride up the wave surface, emulating the maneuvers of other board sports. Always an attraction for both riders and spectators, the FlowRider appeals to every level of ability and thrill-seeking guest.
Riptide Bay, open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, is an integral part of the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor experience. The High Tide retail gift store and 5 o’clock Phil’s tiki-style restaurant are included to provide guests with a full-service environment further increasing the ROI for Six Flags.
ADG’s planning, design, engineering and construction teams participated as a key contributor in the development of the addition from initial concept through opening day. Executing on the Six Flags Great America project scope, ADG delivered comprehensive project planning, execution and continues to provide service and support.
